We are seeking a
Principal Applied Scientist - The Create Team, Office Group. In this role you will collaborate with a multi-functional group to
deliver next generation innovations and experiences, leveraging, fine tuning and prompting engineering foundation models.
You will partner with product and engineering teams to invent and deliver on the future for Microsoft CoPilot and other generative artificial products (AI) products.

This role can be based out of any of Microsoft offices in the US, with flexibility for in-office or work from home schedules. If within a reasonable commutable distance from MS Offices in Redmond, Silicon Valley/Mountainview, CA there is a preference to be on-site occasionally to engage with stakeholders.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research, (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)/large multimodal model (LMM)/Small Language Model (SLM), computer vision, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience
- 2+ years of customer/user-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
- 2+ years of experience working on Machine Learning (ML) models such as Natural language-based models, Large Language Models (LLMs), Vector Databases (DBs)/ Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., LLM/LMM/SLM, computer vision, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., LLM/LMM/SLM, computer vision, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., LLM/LMM/SLM, computer vision, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience in machine learning.
- 2+ years using ML tools like Pytorch and TensorFlow.
- Demonstrated experience developing applications using prompt engineering, fine tuning, Open AI or Azure Open AI APIs.
- Demonstrated System development skills, with a long-range system view that leverages development ranging from rapid research prototypes to carefully architected complex systems.
- 3+ top tier Computer Science conference publications.
Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
